Premium Wood Floor Polishing and Maintenance in Mayfair, W1K

What We Found on Arrival

A prestigious Mayfair townhouse with antique parquet flooring in main reception room. Floor is original Victorian, laid in chevron pattern, and has tremendous character – but years of entertaining and daily use left it with dull, tired appearance. Client wanted floor's lustre restored without aggressive treatment that might compromise original material.

The Work

We carried out specialist polish and buff service designed for valuable antique floors. After careful cleaning, we used very fine abrasive and professional-grade buffer to gently restore surface, removing top layer of accumulated grime and oxidised finish without disturbing original wood. We applied thin coat of premium, UV-stable lacquer formulated specifically for antique parquet.

The Result

The floor now displays true beauty – grain is sharp, colour is revived, subtle satin finish is sophisticated and appropriate to period interior. Chevron pattern creates movement and visual interest that was hidden by dull old finish. Work took 1.5 days with minimal household disruption. The client is delighted – it's almost like having new original parquet, but with all character and patina intact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should antique floors be polished rather than sanded?

Sanding removes material – even light sanding removes patina and slight variations giving antique flooring its character. Polishing refreshes finish without removing irreplaceable original material. For floors over 100 years old, this distinction is crucial.

Is UV-stable lacquer necessary?

Yes, especially in properties with large windows or skylights. Standard lacquers yellow over 2-3 years reacting to sunlight. UV-stable lacquers remain clear indefinitely. In period property where floor is significant feature, investment in premium lacquer pays back.

How do I maintain an antique floor between professional services?

Vacuum regularly to remove grit. Wipe spills immediately with barely damp cloth. Use professional wood floor cleaner diluted as directed – never wet-mop. Use felt pads under furniture. Avoid direct sunlight (use blinds). Maintain humidity at 45-55%. Professional polishing every 5 years keeps floor in perfect condition indefinitely.
